Fencing School
“Catherine Group” Company has established and is financing “Catherine” Children’s Fencing Club, where 60 children of various age groups are trained. Many students of the Club won the first places in Armenian competitions, as well as participated in various international tournaments, thus bringing medals to the country. The Company organizes Club Members Stays on the sunny beach of “Noy Land” resort near Lake Sevan, which support the physical development of children and thus promote new achievements in sport.
Awards on the occasion of four-years-activity of “Catherine” fencing club.
It’s already four years that “Catherine” fencing club has been functioning, and during this period club trainees have had numerous opportunities to participate in different Armenian and international tournaments. Today, the President of the club Mihran Poghosyan awarded the best trainees for their enthusiasm, love towards the sport and accomplishments.
The fencing club was founded in 2007 and has 50 athletes from Yerevan and Byureghavan. The club fencers have won 7 gold, 8 silver, 21 bronze medals in Armenian, and 4 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals in international tournaments.
The international fencing tournament hosted by Antalya, Turkey, 2009, was remarkable. Female fencer Hasmik Aghababyan from “Catherine” fencing club gained the silver medal. The tournament hosted 83 participants from Turkey, Georgia, Bulgaria, Russia, Egypt, Syria and India. Hasmik Aghababyan has won in two international tournaments hosted by Batumi, Georgia, in 2009 and 2010, as well as completed the Sport’s Master normative in the last two Armenian Youth Tournaments.
Kutaisi and Batumi, Georgia-hosted international fencing championship with Armenian, Georgian, Russian, Iranian and Azeri sportsmen participating, Armenian fencers performed successfully at the championship, gaining 7 medals. Arpine Atoyan and Emma Poghosova became champions in “rapier fencing” and “sword fencing” disciplines respectively.
Many of “Catherine” fencers are involved in different Armenian teams. The management of the club cares for the rest of the fencers, too. During summer holidays they have teachings-and-trainings in Sevan.
“Catherine” fencing club president Mihran Poghosyan greeted the trainees of the club and said that since its foundation the club had pursued the goal to train, educate and motivate children to become professional in the sphere they love. Mr. Poghosyan was confident that the accomplishments, awards and skills were the result of faithful and diligent work of professional coaches and without them they could not have been successful.
“Dear fencers, you are destined to start your sport biography from your early age. You have already had opportunities to take part in international tournaments, get in touch with trainees from fencing schools of different countries. I hope that your gold, silver and bronze medals will serve as an example and lesson for younger fencers”- said the club president and wished many successes both in life and big sport.
Armenian Fencing Federation President Armen Grigoryan also congratulated the fencers and mentioned that “Catherine” fencing club is the only independent institution that has serious accomplishments. According to the federation president, the best is yet to come which will promote the development of fencing in Armenia.
Parents, sport fans, etc. were also present at the event.

International youth fencing championship in Kutaisi, Georgia (June 17-20) hosted participants from Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Armenian fencers gained 1gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals. Armenian fencers represented fencers' club "Catherine". Female fencer Arpine Atoyan won the first prize in “rapier fencing”, and Hasmik Aghababyan came third in the same discipline. Female fencer Emma Poghosova gained the bronze medal in “sword fencing”.
These accomplishments and awards testify about the strong fencing traditions, as well as of its development in Armenia.
